Information about Cabinet

The Cabinet makes key decisions and recommendations to the Council on how services are provided for local people.

The Cabinet is made up of seven councillors, including the Leader and Deputy Leader(s). Its main responsibilities include monitoring the Council budget, making day-to-day decisions on resources and forming partnerships with other organisations.

The Cabinet has collective responsibility for any decisions made. Individual members of the Cabinet have responsibility for specific groups of services, known as portfolios which reflect the Council's strategic objectives.  Sometimes, there is joint responsibility between councillors and officers for decisions.

Other councillors can attend on an issue-by-issue basis but substitutes or co-opted members are not allowed. The Cabinet reflects the political leadership of the Council, so the Cabinet is currently made up entirely of members of the Labour group.
